Yankees: 4

W: Castillo (1-0), L: Robertson (0-1), S: Simon

Phil Hughes did everything he could during his 5 2/3 innings.  The Yankees held a 2-1 lead, and Hughes was in a zone, but his pitch count was too high, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi was forced to take him out of the game.  After that, the bullpen came in, and everything fell apart.

The pen imploded, and the Orioles went on to win, 5-4, which earned them their fourth win of the season.

Hughes retired the first two Orioles of the sixth inning, but his pitch reached 109 pitches, and Girardi decided to takes him out.

Lefthander Boone Logan came in first, and walked Luke Scott.

Girardi then turned to David Robertson, who hit Ty Wigginton.  With runners on first and second base, Orioles 1B Rhyne Hughes ripped an RBI single, to tie the game at two.

Nolan Reimold then singled to left field, which scored Wigginton, and gave the Orioles the lead.  The Orioles would strike a third time in the inning on an RBI single from Cesar Izturis.

The Orioles scored three times in the sixth, all with two outs in the inning.  Hughes was given a no decision.

Baltimore scored for a fifth time in the eighth inning, when Cesar Izturis hit another RBI single.

The Orioles turned to closer Alfredo Simon in the ninth inning, and New York struck together a rally.

Yankee DH Nick Swisher scored on an error by Izturis, and then Mark Teixeira drove in pinch runner Ramiro Pena with an RBI single.  The Orioles lead was cut to one run.

However, with two outs, and the tying run on third base, Alex Rodriguez grounded out to second base, and the Orioles held on to the win.

The Yankees bullpen surrendered four runs in their 2 1/3 innings of work.

The Yankees seek to win the second game of the series as they take on the Orioles at 7:05 ET. on Wednesday.  CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yanks, and he’ll face Baltimore’s Jeremy Guthrie.

Vazquez lasted just 3.2 innings, and gave up five runs before being pulled.
